Guide Profile: Joe Charleson

A guide can make or break your safari. He will be leading the trip, acting as your host and unfolding the wonders of the Africa’s nature to you. The partners at Ker & Downey not only have many years of experience, but we also have highly specialised knowledge and abilities. Combine these with our sense of fun and adventure and you’re guaranteed the holiday of a lifetime.

Joe has lived in Kenya from the age of 10. He has worked as a professional safari guide for over a decade leading safaris throughout East and Southern Africa. At the start of his career, Joe worked as a resident guide at some of the most prestigious safari destinations in the continent, including Jack’s Camp in Botswana and Cottar’s 1920’s Camp in Kenya, before starting his own independent tour operation and setting up Leleshwa Camp, an exclusive private tented camp on the edge of Kenya’s Maasai Mara Game Reserve.

In March 2005, Joe was invited to join Ker & Downey Safaris, one of the oldest and most respected safari companies in Africa, as a professional safari guide on their truly traditional luxury mobile tented safaris.

Joe’s academic background is in Biological Sciences and he graduated from Bristol University in 1997. Since then he has maintained his deep interest in wildlife and its conservation. As a KPSGA silver level safari guide, his knowledge is wide ranging and his most keen area of interest is in animal behaviour.

When not out on safari with guests Joe and his wife Gillian can be found at Leleshwa Camp, their home in the bush, where they live with their son Kian and 2 dogs.
